So, here we are. One of the most anticipated sporting -or should we say, just boxing?- events in recent years is about to begin. Minutes left and we’re all, I mean millions who have been waiting for this match to happen, thinking about the same thing: Who will win, the ever annoying Jake Paul or the boxing legend Iron Mike Tyson? And of course, whether the match is fixed or not…
It’s obvious now that I am rooting for Mike Tyson, but that’s not important regarding what I am about to say.
The live stream started at 4 a.m. where I live (Türkiye, for those who don’t know) and I have been up to watch “Mario Barrios vs Abel Ramos” and “Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano”, thinking that these matches will help me get rid of sleepiness and get me ready for “Paul vs Tyson”.
All was well until the we were several rounds in “Taylor vs Serrano” and the connection started to drop off. And as a person who has been following the industry and someone who wrote a thesis a long time ago, in relation to some of those things, I thought, this wouldn’t happen on television. I mean what we have been labeling as an advancement, you know the advent of platforms and all, might not really be an advancement when it comes to high-demand events such as these. And I also thought, would it be hard to get a streaming partner, a second channel like YouTube or Twitch to take the steam off of Netflix’s infrastructure… Of course that wouldn’t be as profitable but Netflix is getting the hate now… People have been complaining for some time because they are paying customers who want to see this thing live. And I am sure there are millions around the world who watch Jake Paul taking the stage as I write on illegal streaming sites.
I even thought of going to sleep because I cannot watch it via Netflix and I am not a boxing aficionado but decided not to just to see Mike Tyson in the ring. I mean who wouldn’t?
The fight is about to start… And I’ll have a few words about this blog in the next entry.
Now that the match is over and Mike lost, there are a few things to say: He is 58 and Jake is 27. So, this is not unexpected, but I kinda wished that Mike would show some weight and keep up with Jake, just to watch a legend in action after 20 years and see Jake get punished a little. But I must say that the fact that Jake bowed and saluted Mike in the last seconds and referred to him as a legend at all times and kept his respect, that was good on Jake’s side.
About streaming issues, which should have been the topic of this piece, I have to say that I couldn’t watch the match on Netflix as a paying user. I found a Twitter link, one of hundreds if not thousands, and over a million people were watching it via that stream. That cut off and I found another link. I don’t know how many were there…
That’s all normal but it would be better if I, we would be able to watch it happen on the platform we pay for. One last thing, I kinda miss the good old television…
